Two separate parts markets
Outboard and inboard marine engines are almost entirely separate worlds when it comes to sourcing parts. They share no components, have different service schedules, and draw from different seller networks. Getting parts for one from a supplier who specializes in the other usually ends in frustration.
Knowing which type you have, and what distinguishes each, helps you find the right seller faster.
Outboard engines
Outboards mount to the transom and can be tilted out of the water. The engine, gearcase, and drive are a single self-contained unit. Common brands: Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, Tohatsu, Suzuki, and the discontinued Evinrude/Johnson OMC line.
Parts for current-production Mercury and Yamaha outboards are well-supported through the OEM dealer network and a large aftermarket. Sierra Marine and CDI Electronics make compatible parts for most platforms and are widely used.
For discontinued engines like Evinrude and Johnson (OMC ended production in 2020), parts are still available but primarily through used channels and specialty suppliers. If you have an older OMC engine, a seller who specifically works with discontinued outboards is worth finding.
Inboard and sterndrive engines
Inboard engines sit inside the hull. Sterndrive setups (also called inboard/outboard, or I/O) use an internal engine with an external drive unit through the transom. Common brands: MerCruiser, Volvo Penta, and the discontinued OMC Cobra.
MerCruiser is the most common sterndrive in North America. Parts are available new through dealers and aftermarket, and used units come from boats that were repowered or parted out. Volvo Penta has solid OEM support. OMC Cobra was discontinued in 2000, so used parts and specialty suppliers are the main options for those.
What to specify when requesting parts
The more specific you are, the better:
- Brand and full model name (not just "my outboard")
- Year and serial number (critical for matching year-specific parts)
- Horsepower rating
- Two-stroke or four-stroke, for older outboards
- For sterndrives: the drive model, not just the engine model
Mercury serial numbers decode to exact production dates and configurations. Yamaha uses a model code that identifies the generation. Including these avoids the wrong part being quoted.
Finding marine parts sellers
Marine parts sellers are a specialty category. Not every auto parts seller works with marine applications, and the parts don't cross over. Finding sellers who actually carry marine inventory, especially for older or less common brands, takes more effort than a general search.
Post a request on AnyPartsHub with your engine brand, model, serial number, and the part you need. Verified marine parts sellers respond with what they have.
